| CONTEMPLATIONS :: Guenther Rabl :: Free Space |

Wistfully I recall the time when the difference between instrumental music and loudspeaker music was not distinct. The whole world of sounds was a single adventurous surging for me. I experienced sounds more intensively; today I hear their deficiencies more clearly. Yes, I voluntarily devoted myself to their intensity by putting them in loops and listening to them hundreds of times, allowing their ‘eternal recurrence’ to have an impact on me. The problematic nature of repetition was unknown to me, too. Occasionally I surely sensed something – namely when it meant turning off the sequence. How differently I face the sound world today! Eternity has not given way; on the contrary, it has multiplied through ever-new directions. It has to be this way for people who gain free outer space, but have to leave the safety of the Earth’s surface to do it. Certainly, the movements are now more diverse, but they also have to be more precise, because every drift leads to an abyss. Sometimes I long for the blooming, unending earthly valley of my musical childhood. Yet, whoever has conquered free space has no way back: Free space has conquered him. |
